You don't really have to do much, it actually goes by itself. So the effort you put in is actually very small, and the effect is very big, but with those standard exercises, with those movements you have to do that you get from physiotherapy, you have to put in much more effort. (…) After an exercise, you get to see the assessment, whether you should continue, whether it's 'amazing'. If it went well, that compliment appears. I really need that. Then I think: next time I'll do it again. So that encourages me to keep doing it.

I appreciate the Corpus VR program because it focuses on external training rather than internal training, which research shows to be more effective. Patients often experience immediate relief from their symptoms, making the program useful for both short-term and long-term benefits. Additionally, the program trains various aspects such as mobility, coordination, and muscle endurance. Patients can also use the Corpus VR Personal at home, providing them with more opportunities to practice.

Previously, I gave boring exercises, which often led to a lack of motivation among my patients to perform their exercises at home. Since I started using Corpus VR, the exercises have become much more enjoyable, and I notice that they motivate my patients to participate more actively in their therapy. Using a tablet, I can track my patients' progress, such as how often and how long they practice. This allows me to adjust the exercises during treatment or remotely, making them more challenging or cognitively demanding. This approach has significantly improved therapy adherence and the effectiveness of the treatment.

With VR solutions, treatment plans can be much better tailored to the patient, and a platform like Corpus VR offers new possibilities for home rehabilitation. This saves both the patient and the therapist time and provides real-time data that can be used immediately to make the necessary adjustments to the treatment.

Research

Research shows that VR exercises not only increase motivation but also contribute to pain reduction and movement improvement.

Pain reduction: VR versus traditional treatments

A recent meta-analysis shows that VR exercises can significantly reduce pain in patients with chronic low back pain. The average pain intensity decreased by 1.92 points on a scale of 0 to 10 after a VR intervention. Moreover, this improvement was maintained at six-month follow-up measurements (an average difference of 6.34 points, which is substantial!).

Notably, the combination of VR exercises and physiotherapy yielded better results than physiotherapy alone. Patients who added VR exercises to their program experienced an additional pain reduction of an average of 3.26 points compared to traditional exercises without VR exercises.

Improvement of movement fear (kinesiophobia)

In addition to pain reduction, VR exercises also contribute to reducing movement fear. After a four-week VR treatment, an average decrease of 12.04 points on the kinesiophobia scale was measured, indicating that patients had less fear of movement. This can lead to better therapy adherence and longer-lasting effects of the treatment.

Although exact figures vary, it is believed that VR therapy often works faster than traditional treatments. With VR, patients can practice at home, eliminating the need to travel. This saves time for both the patient and the therapist, who can thus help more people in the same amount of time.

In which types of therapy can VR exercises be effectively used?

VR exercises are increasingly being applied in various types of therapy to support patients in an innovative and effective way.

Physical therapy, kinesitherapy, and exercise therapy

Within physical therapy, VR exercises help improve motor skills, reduce pain, and promote rehabilitation. In kinesitherapy, clients can also benefit from interactive movement therapy that stimulates mobility and coordination.

Additionally, exercise therapy with VR offers a playful and motivating way to improve movement patterns and reduce complaints.

Manual therapy and chiropractic

In manual therapy and chiropractic, VR can be used to analyze posture and mobility and to offer targeted exercises that support recovery.

Movement therapy

In movement therapy, aimed at restoring and optimizing body movement, VR offers a valuable addition through realistic and personalized exercise programs.

Thanks to the many possibilities with VR exercises, therapists within these various disciplines can respond to the needs of their clients and guide them to faster recovery in an innovative and fun way.
