What other satisfied users say

Tobias
You don't really have to do much for it, it actually happens automatically. So the effort you put into it is actually very small, and the effect is very big. But with those standard exercises, with those movements you have to do that you get from physiotherapy, you have to put in much more effort. (...) After completing an exercise, you get to see the assessment, whether you should continue, or if it's 'amazing'. If it went well, that compliment appears. I really need that. Then I think: next time I'll do it again. So that motivates me to keep doing it.

It was also very easy because I just had to put that thing on and then I could get started right away, so that was nice.

While playing, you are momentarily freed from thinking about how to do it. When someone disappears into a game, I forget the surroundings, and also my own body actually. (...) Look, with Corpus, there is a certain predictability. When I play the game, I sit very safely on a chair. In a very safe environment. (...) I just needed a little help somehow to plant a seed in my mind that I can do it myself.

In general the design is very appealing. Some of them are more appealing than others maybe, but, they all are appealing.

You have more variety in terms of games, so you don't have to do boring exercises every time. The feedback from the system provides insight into the progression of my complaints. Then you look at the graph and think: 'Hey, I have come a bit further than last week.'

It's a completely different approach; it gets you moving because you are immersed in that virtual reality.

You do notice that the headset gives you a bit more freedom of movement.

I must say that it's actually easier with the VR headset because you don't have to remember what you had to do, and how much and how often. (...) But the explanation that you can read before you start such a game is indeed very clear about what you need to do.

Research

Studies VR exercises related to pain complaints

Howard, M.C. (2017) This study assesses the effectiveness of virtual reality rehabilitation (VRR) in improving physical functions such as motor control, balance, gait and strength. The meta-analysis shows that VR exercises are often more effective than traditional methods, especially for improving gait patterns and strength. Success is attributed to three factors: increased motivation, physical accuracy and cognitive engagement. The study concludes that VR is a valuable addition in rehabilitation care and can stimulate further innovation.

Mallari, B. et al. (2019) This study investigates the use of VR exercises for pain management in both acute and chronic pain. VR exercises appear to be effective in reducing acute pain during and after medical procedures, such as wound care or chemotherapy. For chronic pain, it provides temporary relief during use. The success is attributed to the distraction VR exercises provide by immersing users in a virtual world.

Studies on user experiences

Studies have been conducted on patient experiences with immersive VR exercises. Some findings in a row:

Because you can sit quietly during treatment, a number of respondents named it as a safe exercise method (n=2). Several additionally reported that there was no sense of obligation (n=3). These factors all contributed to respondents’ compliance (n=3). Several respondents also indicated that seeing their results was an important factor for perspective on their symptom progression.

Another treatment option of iVR is aimed at specific complaints, including neck and shoulder pain, focusing on increasing the range of motion (ROM). Several games are available for this purpose, in which respondents were challenged to move without restrictions. Increased mobility was often experienced after treatment with the VR glasses (n=4).

Also, the virtual environment is another approach to physiotherapy, encouraging patients to engage in physical activity (n=3).
